Mark Russinovich is joining Microsoft

July 18th, 2006. Published under Work. No Comments.

Big news today that Microsoft has purchased Sysinternals, but I think the bigger news is that Mark is going to join Microsoft as a technical fellow. This is great news and a great hire. Welcome to the team Mark :)

I know that Scoble isnt working for Microsoft anymore, but I’m surprised he hasn’t blogged this yet.

So you work for Microsoft: Have you met Bill Gates?

July 27th, 2005. Published under Work. No Comments.

The most common question I have gotten since joining Microsoft has been: “Have you met/will you get to meet Bill Gates?”. Of course the answer is No I have not and no I probably never will.

Then I read a few blog entries about Interns getting to have a BBQ at Bill’s house and that he is there and speaks to the interns. This makes me wonder: Why do interns get the pleasure of meeting Bill and having a BBQ at his house while new/old employees will likely never have that opportunity?

How about it Bill? I’ll be in Redmond in October, how about a new employee BBQ? :)

Got to have lunch with some Microsoft Canada Execs today

May 6th, 2005. Published under Work. No Comments.

Today I had the chance to have lunch with David Hemler, Chris Stanley and Michael Eisen who are all executives here at Microsoft Canada. It was a small lunch with 7 other people in addition to the 3 execs and we had the chance to introduce ourselves and ask them a few questions. Very laid back and informal sort of thing and it was really great. I was impressed that they took the time to meet with us and give us the opportunity to get to know them a bit. They were very easy going and seemed genuinely interested in listening to us and answering the questions/comments we had.

Lots of fun and as I told David, it reinforced that my decision to join Microsoft was the right decision. Not many companies executives would sit down for lunch with an Associate Consultant and it was a very nice change for me.

Thank you David, Chris and Michael! Also, thanks to Tanya for setting it up.

First week at Microsoft

March 22nd, 2005. Published under Work. No Comments.

Follow up to My first day at Microsoft:

Well, my first week was more lively than I thought it would be! I was expecting to have my nose down in my laptop reading documents, finding internal resources, playing with technology and starting some courses…writing that down it seems like a lot, but it was actually a lot of fun so hasn’t felt like work yet.

Anyway, on top of that I was asked to go onsite to a customer who was having some issues and try to help them out. I didn’t spend a lot of time at the customer site, but it was something I wasn’t expecting! It was definitely great to be able to get out and help someone out (at least I hope I helped them! ;) and I am glad the opportunity came up.

So, al in all it hasn’t been an overly eventful first week, but it has been crammed with stuff to keep me busy. Everyone that I have come into contact with here at the office in Mississauga has been incredibly nice, helpful and supportive and even the people that I’ve only shared email conversations with have been awesome. This is definitely one of the nicest places I’ve worked yet and I hope this keeps up! Based on the length of service of some of my friends who are working here I think it is definitely going to keep up.

So far I would absolutely encourage anyone looking for a job to take a good look at Microsoft.

First day at Microsoft

March 14th, 2005. Published under Work. No Comments.

So my first day at Microsoft is officially over and I survived so far. I wasn’t sure what to expect since my role will be as a consultant and the first few weeks at least I won’t be doing any consulting so I didn’t know what I would be doing.

The quick rundown:

Met my boss at 9 and talked with her about what my first 3 months are going to look like, her expectations and suggestions etc. She asked what I was interested in getting involved in which I thought was incredible! How often do you take a job and get asked by your new boss what kind of project you wanted to focus on?

After about an hour I was introduced to the guy who runs Services for Canada and his admin assisstant took me off my bosses hands and helped me get my laptop (not a tablet), showed me where I can sit, showed me where HR was and all sorts of stuff like that. The rest of the day was spent reading information, filling out forms and trying to get my laptop setup.

I was a little let down I got a laptop instead of a tablet as I was looking forward to getting my hands on a tablet and really getting to check them out. Fortunately for me my boss was surprised too and when she heard I had been looking forward to a tablet she arranged to swap my laptop for a tablet. Awesome!

So far it’s great, everyone is very friendly and there is a ton of information to go through and take in. The only odd thing is that no one from my team is actually in the office, so it is a bit odd that way, but everyone who is here is great so that helps a lot.

And tomorrow I have to mention to my boss that I have this blog and get the scoop on blogging at Microsoft etc.
